There are maple syrup events galore at this time of year in Ohio and one that maple syrup enthusiasts will truly enjoy is the 37th annual Maple Syrup Family Festival being held at Malabar Farm in Lucas, Ohio on Saturdays March 2 and 9 and on Sundays, March 3 and 10.
Malabar Farm Maple Syrup Family Festival Located approximately 80 miles from Cleveland near Mansfield, this free, family- friendly, educational Festival takes place on the 900 acre historic farm at Malabar Farm State Park.
Among the activities available are demonstrations of sugaring techniques over the years and you can take a self-guided tour of the sugar camp and sugarhouse where you can see the evolution of sugaring equipment and how maple sap is turned into maple syrup.
There are horse-drawn wagon rides (courtesy of the Central Ohio Draft Horse Association) which will take you to the sugar camp. Along the way you will be greeted by the sight of metal buckets hanging from the trees collecting sap.
You can also go inside the summer bell house which is now set up as a pioneer cabin. Visitors can take part in daily pioneer chores like cooking, making candles, tending fire and washing clothes.
There will be live musical entertainment provided in the Pugh Log Cabin located nearby. Light refreshments and snacks are available. Free samples of maple syrup will be given out at the sugarhouse. Lunch and dinner specials will be offered at the Malabar Farm restaurant featuring maple food items.
While at the Festval, you can also take a self-guided tour of author Louis Bromfield’s 32 room mansion on site. A Historic Note: Movie stars Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall were married in the mansion in 1945 with Louis Bromfield serving as their best man. There is an admission charge for the mansion tour.
Pure Ohio maple syrup, maple popcorn, maple cotton candy, maple walnut fudge and other maple products will be on sale during the Festival.
Hours for the Maple Syrup Family Festival are noon – 4 p.m all days of the Festival. Again, admission is free.
