Anther year another month and another opportunity to taste win in Portland! It looks like Europe is the source of most wine being offered this week. With several shops still to report in, check back here, through Friday noon for updates. We anticipate several.
This week, let’s also look at something that isn’t happening here: winery, vineyard or wine shop advertisements. Really! When was the last time you saw one, or are you able to recall one. These are three examples of wine commercials from other parts of America:
Mr. Bill’s Wine Cellar Funny Commercial (Roanoke Wine Store) FUNNY TV Commercial – Hiney Wine – Best Video Funny Wine Commercial – Cameron Hughes Wine
Wine is to be enjoyed, with friends, within a welcoming environment and you better be laughing! Wine is fun!
Here’s this week’s slate of opportunities. Updates will be made by noon Friday, so check back for complete information. Remember, taste wine safely! It’s the Oregon way!

“In light of this week’s rather dreary weather what might taste better than a hit of sunshine. Especially if it comes in the form of bottled warmth from southern Italy? Each time I open these wines their dark, ripe aromas and flavors totally speak of the land they hail from. We’ll be traveling from the heel of the boot of Italy in Puglia, across the instep through Campania and Calabria, then hop a metaphorical ferry over to the beautiful island of Sardinia, then finish with a tour of the ruggedly gorgeous Sicilian vineyards. These wines scream character and warmth. This is truly the wine path less traveled in Italy, which translates into some unbelievable value. This is going to be a pretty stunning tasting of some wines you might not get a chance to drink that often. One of the reasons we do these Friday exercises is to give you the opportunity to sample things you may not have experienced. Cases in point…..”
–2011 PERVINI Puglia Rosso “Anarkos” Negramaro-Primitivo-Malvasia Nera (Puglia) $10.95
–2009 TENUTA DEI POSSI Nero d’Avola “Sicani” (Sicily) $14.95
–2007 SELLA & MOSCA Carignano Riserva “Terre Rare” (Sardinia)$14.95…this showed incredibly well when we had a tasting with the importer here at the store a week ago Wednesday. It is also a sneak preview of half of a fabulous case in next week’s VINO E-Special!
-2006 ODOARDI “Savuto Gaglioppo-Greco Nero-Nerello Cappuccio-Magliocco Canino-Sangiovese (Calabria) $16.95….89 pts-Wine Advocate: “This is a gorgeous effort from Odoardi. Even better, it is a steal for the money.
–2008 MOLETTIERI Aglianico Irpinia (Campania) $22.95….90 pts-Wine Advocate: “Molettieri can be counted on for rich, stylish wines that capture the essence of Aglianico!”
Then as always we take you into an even better world in bonus land….
-2008 FEUDO MACCARI Nero d’Avola “Saia” (Sicily) $23.95….90 pts-Wine Spectator. This awesome Nero was originally $44 a bottle. We’ve been cut a deal that drops that price a rather tidy $20 a bottle!!
-2011 OCCHIPINTI Frappato “SP 68″ (Sicily) $25.95…this winery is becoming a legend in the wine world for their ethereally flavorful, naturally made reds. You have to try this beauty!
-2006 GULFI DI VITO CATANIA Nero d’Avola “Nerobaronj” (Sicily)$34.95….93 pts-Wine Advocate: “The 2006 Nero d’Avola Nerobaronj emerges from the glass with compelling, exotic inner perfume in its super-ripe red cherries, black currants, chocolate, flowers, spices and licorice. Soft and succulent throughout, it impresses for its superb balance and round, harmonious finish. This is a magnificent Nero d’Avola from Gulfi. The super-ripe style is vaguely Amarone-like and it is breathtaking!”
