Pet Food Stamps is a new program providing free pet food for low-income pet owners nationwide. The founder of the Pet Food Stamps Program appeared on “Fox and Friends” live Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2013, and he reports that yesterday they had 20,000 applications come in from their website. Over 45,000 people have put in their application for this Pet Food Stamps program in the last two weeks from all across the country.
The tough economic times have caused some families to give up their beloved pets because they cannot afford to feed them. This heartbreaking scenario can be avoided today with the Pet Food Stamp program providing food at no cost to their owners. You just need to fit the criteria to qualify for the free food for your four-legged friends and fill out the online application, according to MSN on Monday.
According to Okon, who is also the executive director of the program, there’s a real need for Pet Food Stamps today. “It’s aimed at preventing people from having to choose between feeding themselves or their animals or having to surrender them to a high-kill shelter.”
How to Apply:
Fill out the online application here at petfoodstamps.org/, which is the Pet Food Stamps website. Once the program verifies the application and your pet is accepted into the program, you will get free pet food from the retailer, Pet Food Direct, for a period of six months.
As of today, the only way to apply for Pet Food Stamps is with the online application, but the program is moving to a new location and when they do, they will be accepting applications through the mail. This is a New York based program, but it is open to pet owners across the country, according to Opposing Views on Monday.
While the program is very much like the Food Stamps program for people, this program is not federally funded and Okon tells “Fox and Friends” that they do not plan to apply for federal funding. Okon tells Fox’s Steve Doocy that financial hardships can cause a family to surrender their pet to a shelter due to lack of money to feed their four-legged family member. He talks about how traumatic this could be for kids to have to give up their best friend. Scenarios like this are what this program is hoping to help avoid.
It sounds like the days of choosing between feeding your pet or feeding yourself is over for some low-income people today, as this is what Pet Food Stamps aims to do. Food stamps for people have gone up by 13.9 million since 2009, according to “Fox and Friends.” The Pet Food Stamps will help the same families on food stamps to be able to afford to keep their pets, claims Okon.
