Austin was recently spotlighted in Bon Appetit’s list of ‘The 20 Most Important Restaurants in America’ as the home of two top contenders. Franklin Barbecue went from a trailer in an East Austin parking lot in 2009 all the way to number 17 on the list, while Tyson Cole’s fine Japanese dining at Uchi and Uchiko broke into the top half at number ten.
But for the true foodie, kitchen love doesn’t end with a dinner out. BookPeople satisfies the cravings of Austin readers looking for great new literature from local and national authors. But the North Lamar bookstore can also cultivate culinary cravings when they host author events with a gourmet twist.
In the next few weeks, the store will be serving up three events for all kinds of eaters:
This weekend, Sara Lundberg guides you through the grocery store to find the best deals without drowning in a sea of coupons.
Next week, Chloe Coscarelli of ‘Cupcake Wars’ fame brings the battle-tested vegan dessert recipes of her new cookbook.
Later in March, Crystal Esquivel brings signature recipes from the city’s top restaurants and chefs that you can make in your own kitchen.
For more information on each of these events, click on the ‘View the list’ button below. Whether you are on a budget, have a restricted diet, or just want to try the best of what Austin chefs have to offer at home, you can find something delicious at BookPeople this March.
March 2: Sara Lundberg
Sara Lundberg is the Budget Savvy Diva, constantly updating her readers online with up-to-the-hour coupons, rebates, promotions, and deals on anything from supplements to flower seeds. Lundberg wants shoppers to be able to save money without losing sleep, eliminating the stress that can often come with clipping coupons and stalking sales. She also has an entire category dedicated to frugal eats for turning those steal of a deal ingredients into a tasty meal.
Now, she’s collected the best strategies of her site into a pocket guide that shoppers can take with them into the grocery store and the kitchen. Along with tricks for finding hidden bargains and getting the most out of coupons, there are recipes for stretching every dollar on the dinner table. Lundberg will talk about her journey to becoming the Budget Savvy Diva, share some tips, and sign copies of her book at 2 pm on Saturday, March 2.
March 5: Chloe Coscarelli
The bakers on Food Network’s ‘Cupcake Wars’ have enough of a challenge with unexpected ingredients and a ticking clock. So when Chloe Coscarellli became the first contestant to win with vegan cupcakes, it was an even greater achievement.
Building off of the momentum of her television exposure, Chef Chloe has released her first all-dessert cookbook, Chloe’s Vegan Desserts, going beyond cupcakes to ice cream, doughnuts, and pies. From traditional treats like crumb cake to fun twists like Tiramisu Pancakes, there’s no reason for vegans to not have a sweet finish to every day. Of course, there are more than a dozen recipes for Chef Chloe’s signature cupcakes.
Chef Chloe will be at BookPeople at 7 pm on Tuesday, March 5. Wristbands will be available at 9 am the morning of the event.
March 18: Crystal Esquivel
Crystal Esquivel is a Registered Dietician and author who has been enjoying the creative cuisine of Austin chefs for more than ten years while also whipping things up in her kitchen at home. She’s also written the ‘Food Lover’s Guide to Austin’.
With ‘Austin Chef’s Table’, Esquivel has gathered recipes from more than fifty icons of the city’s food scene. Whether originally prepared in food trailers or high-end restaurants these recipes will serve Austinites well in their own kitchens.
Ask Esquivel her favorite place to eat in Austin and pick up a copy of her new book at 7 pm on Monday, March 18.
