After launching their 9th Annual Green 17 Tour at the Orbit Room in Grand Rapids on Thursday night, Flogging Molly brought the tour to a packed house at the Fillmore Detroit on Friday night.
Flogging Molly fiddler and backing vocalist, Bridget Regan, is from the Detroit area and she and her husband, lead vocalist Dave King, reside here part of the time so any show they play in the area is sure to be filled with family and friends.
The celtic punk band conceived the Green 17 tour back in 2004 as a countdown to their favorite holiday St. Patrick’s Day and their legendary live shows keep their fans coming back every year.
The band also uses the Green 17 Tour as a showcase to help out other bands trying to gain some national exposure.
This time out, the show was opened by Dave Hause, whose stripped down performance started the evening out on a high note as he joked around with the crowd.
Skinny Lister was up next and their brand of folk rock kept things moving as the five-piece threw themselves into every note and each infectious chorus.
With the band still touring behind 2011’s Speed of Darkness, Flogging Molly decided to dig deep into the vault and pull out some rarely played songs and even some that had never been played live including “Powers Out” and the beautifully done “Lightning Storm”.
The band took the stage with a flourish to the strains of “Another Bag of Bricks” and things just kept rolling from there with songs like “Selfish Man” and “The Kilburn High Road” sitting along classics like “Float” and “Seven Deadly Sins”.
There were a number of songs from Speed of Darkness as well including the fantastic “Heart of the Sea”.
King also kept things moving as he engaged with the crowd and drank along with them throughout the set.
He kicked the evening off by talking about how after the Grand Rapids show they had to do the long drive back so couldn’t party as much as they had wanted to but that there would be no problem in Detroit.
Flogging Molly finished things off with a encore of crowd favorites “Salty Dog” and “If I Ever Leave This World Alive”.
