A chorus of voices within the gun rights and liberty movement has repeatedly warned citizens that the federal government’s actions, whether intentional or not, are provoking possible open civil war in the streets of America.
At a pro-Second Amendment rally in Washington, D.C. Tuesday, an influential Christian pastor, an African American, confirmed the warning of the liberty watchdogs, saying that the Feds are fomenting “blood in our streets.”
The Rev. William Owens Jr. is director of community outreach for the Coalition of African American Pastors. He is also a key leader in the “God, Guns, and the Constitution” movement. Owens stated during the rally Tuesday that the highest levels of the federal government are fomenting civil unrest that could soon lead to blood in our streets.
Owens was joined by other pro-gun leaders at the foot of the Capitol building to take a stand in support of the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution and unfettered gun rights. Among the others at the rally were representatives from other African American pro-gun groups, such as The Black Robe Regimen and the National Black Pro-Life Union.
Larry Pratt, Executive Director of Gun Owners of America, was also present at the rally and stated, “From what we see in our mail, hear from our members, we are at the line in the sand moment.”
The “line in the sand” to which Pratt refers is the declaration of gun owners and patriots that they will tolerate no more encroachments on Second Amendment rights and that further incursions on that right by government will be met with strong resistance and non-compliance.
Such a message may have reached certain members of Congress, although many are still determined to ban semiautomatic guns and force all citizens to undergo criminal background checks when they buy firearms and ammunition. A Senate hearing is being held today on the issue.
However, there are signs that some if not all of the various proposals have run into trouble on the Hill. Democrats who face reelection in conservative states in 2014 are said to be skittish about any gun control legislation. And on Tuesday Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, R-Nev., stated that he does not support Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s draconian gun ban bill.
But many gun rights and liberty activists have stated unequivocally that they have little interest in what Washington does for the simple reason that they have no intention of obeying laws that violate the Constitution.
If there is enough civil disobedience to any new requirement for registration, forfeiture of banned guns, and ammo restrictions, then any new federal law addressing those issues are automatically doomed to failure. Most of the guns purchased before the new laws take effect are not registered. That means nearly 300 million firearms owned by 100 million Americans cannot be traced by the federal government. Neither can the ammunition citizens have been stockpiling.
Without the willing cooperation of citizens the government will fail in its new initiatives on guns just as it did when it implemented Prohibition on alcohol in the early part of the 20th century.
