While some of you may prefer to workout on your own or with a pal; there may come a time when you feel the need to hire a personal trainer. Don’t worry, it isn’t that bad. Not all trainers scream bloody murder at you and make you cry like on the Biggest Loser. Experienced trainers will mold their training techniques to meet your motivation needs. Every client is different and some just need that extra push. Hiring a personal trainer may actually be the best move you will make towards your fitness goal! But keep in mind a very important little tid-bit…even though it may seem so, the trainer is not a miricle worker. You have to let them know what you think and if you feel it is working.
Communication with your Personal Trainer is instrumental in order to to meet your fitness goals. When you hire a Personal Trainer, you are not just paying for a workout partner. I ask my clients to tell me if they are sore the following day or if they are doubt that they are getting a workout. Trainers must have feedback to ensure that you are not over worked and injured or not meeting your fitness goals. The number one objective of a Personal Trainer is to help their client achieve their fitness goals. Here are a few tips to communicating with your trainer to help them to provide you with an effective exercise regimen.
1. Before the session, always communicate any soreness from the last workout. This will help the trainer to know which muscles need to be worked more and which exercises to avoid during the present session.
2. Be honest about your diet. Tell your trainer when you have had a total emotional day and ‘scarffed’ down a pint of cookies-n-cream. Don’t be scared to tell them that you are not perfect. Trainers are human also, they understand. They will need to know why the sudden weight gain.
3. During an exercise always speak up if you feel pain. If an exercise is causing pain your trainer needs to know immediately before proceeding. It is easier to prevent injury than to recover. It is also important to learn the difference in “pain” and soreness.
4. If you are overweight your trainer needs to know your target weight.
5. One of the most important things your trainer needs to know is your goal. Are you looking to shed some pounds, tone a specific area, bulk up, or just become more physically fit. Your trainer doesn’t want to waste your time. Tell them what you want.
6. Communicate to your trainer your main motivating factor. What motivates you to want to exercise or become more fit.
7. What part of the session do you enjoy the most. Tell your trainer which are your favorite exercises and which are your least favorite. When you begin to do an exercise just simply state “I love this one”, “This is my least favorite”.
8. Tell your trainer if you have pain in your chest at any point during your workout. This can be serious so it must be let known to your trainer.
9. Your trainer wants to know if you are working out at home. Let them know what you did since your last session.
10. Communicating all of these things will help the trainer to know when you are ready for the next level.
Let your trainer know when you feel a difference, when your jeans fit differently or when you have dropped pounds. This is rewarding to your trainer to know they have helped you meet your goals. They will then know how much harder to push you for those extra pounds left.
