CEO, Creator and Executive producer of Full Figured Fashion Week (FFF Week) Ms. Gwen DeVoe has dedicated her life to empowering plus size women.
The no nonsense, hard hitting, truth delivering, goal driven, motivational MOGUL is very busy preparing for this year’s Full Figured Fashion Week event that will be held in New York in June from the 17-22, 2013.
I caught up with her at the Full Figured Fashion Week Casting Tour 4th stop sponsored by Lane Bryant that was held yesterday in Orlando and she talked to us exclusively about the show.
FE: What made you decide to go on the road and do a FFF Week Casting Tour?
GD: I decided to do the tour because after four years of the plus size community supporting us and traveling to New York to audition I felt that it was time for us to give back to them. Resources are very slim these days and those that could not afford to travel so far can come to the auditions in a city near them and follow their dream. In addition, we also want to have a more diverse group of women on the runway this year; we don’t want to have the same models every year. The tour also provides more hype for the show.
FE: How has the experience been in the casting tour so far?
GD: It has been great!… Some of the highs are the turnout; we had so many women coming to the auditions. So far we have seen over 100 women at every location driving from different cities and towns to come see us and the love and support that they have showed us means a lot.
Some of the lows are that as the tour gains popularity more people find out about it and they don’t receive all the casting information so they come unprepared. They don’t bring pictures to the auditions, they wear the wrong shoes or are not dressed appropriately. That has been really the only low that some of the girls come very unprepared to the auditions but other than that it has been amazing.
FE: You have set the bar really high; last year’s FFF Week was incredible. What can we expect from the show this year?
GD: This year you can expect an expanded fashion segment. We are going to have 2 regular fashion segments, a segment for the older and seasoned plus size woman, plus size petites and plus size males.
In addition, we are going to have more industry related workshops and a more culturally diverse show.
FE: In your opinion, what do you think is the biggest misconception in the plus size industry?
GD: The biggest misconception in the plus size industry is that we don’t spend money.
The plus size community spends a lot of money not only in fashion but also in health and beauty products.
FE: I always like to end my interviews by asking my guest for some words of wisdom or a favorite quote, what is yours?
GD: My favorite quote is “Go Hard or Go Home”, everything I do is big.
