After examining and making my Class 1A Spring Top 10 last Friday, I’m back to give my 2A Spring Top 10.
Next Friday, I will do my 3A Spring Top 10

Key Losses-Craig Key (OL/DL), Parker Bell (OL/DL), Jeff Williams (OL/DL), Austin DeMaagd (RB/LB)
Spring Strengths- Junior Kyle Akin will come back to run the Lion spread offense.
Akin is coming back off a successful sophomore season and has two returning receivers in Chase Diggs and James Bond
coming back as well.
Spring Questions– Like other schools in the spring Top 10, the Lions will have to replace three offensive linemen in order to keep Akin upright and healthy.

Key Losses– Timothee Brown (RB), Zak Kleinke (RB), Spencer Darnell (TE/LB), Devon Harris (WR/DB)
Spring Strengths– The Mustangs are coming off a Quarterfinal appearance and have 15 starters returning to the fold in 2013.
Quarterback Matt Rosson returns to run the offense while linebackers Cory Allen, Matt Moore and nose guard Taylor Wilson shore up the defense.
Spring Questions– Loretto will have to replace two 1,000 yard rushers in Timothee Brown and Zak Kleinke and three players in Leo Green, Dalton Neese and Cody Fisher will get that chance.

Head Coach- Eric Swenson
Returning Starters On Offense/Defense- 6/6

Key Losses– Jacob Warbritton (QB/FS),
Steve Stover (RB), Logan Diebold (RB/LB), Colin Pruett (OL), Dylan Hindman (OL), Trevor Burlison (OL), Brett Jackson (OL/DL), Seth Fields (DE/TE)
Spring Strengths– The Mustangs return 12 starters off the Class 1A runner up team including junior running back Glynn Hillard, and leading tacklers Tyler Bush and Kenneth Pruitt.
Spring Questions– Obviously finding a quarterback/running back to replace 3,000 yard gainer Jacob Warbritton is first on the list.
Finding four starters on the offensive line will be a big challenge to replace as will moving up in classification from 1A to 2A.
7. Boyd Buchanan Buccaneers
Last Season’s Record- 12-2, lost to Friendship Christian in Semifinals
Head Coach- Grant Reynolds
Returning Starters On Offense/Defense- 3/5

Key Losses– Malik Brewer (OL), Rance Harden (LB), Austin Bailey (C/DE), Austin Hall (TE/LB), John Hale (RB/FS) Colton Robinson (OL/DL), Grant Mathis (WR/DE), Stephen Ingram (LB)
Spring Strengths– Having senior quarterback Jim Cardwell back is big considering the Buccaneers only return three starters on offense.
Cardwell will ignite the offense and will be coming off injury suffered in last year’s semifinal loss to Friendship Christian.
Spring Questions– The Bucs will have to replace four offensive linemen and Rance Harden who played running back and was a force at linebacker.
Finding another weapon on offense to go along with Cardwell will be a must for coach Grant Reynolds.
6. Rockwood Tigers
Last Season’s Record- 6-5, lost to Boyd Buchanan in first round
Head Coach- John Webb
Returning Starters On Offense/Defense- 5/5
Offense- Wing T
Key Returnees– Drake Long (RB/DB, Jr.), Tristan Ewing, (DB, Sr.), Tyler Brown (OL/DL Sr.), Jared Malicoat (LB, Sr.), Malcolm Springs (TE/DE, Sr.), Justin

Key Losses– Hayden Freels (LB), Tyler Skidmore (RB), Matt Cofer (QB), Jared
Breazeale (WR), Eric Reichard (OL)
Spring Strengths– The Tigers have a nucleus of offensive linemen that either started or played some last season which will help coach John Webb as he looks for playmakers.
Spring Questions– Rockwood hope that junior Drake Long can take over for Tyler Skidmore and Webb will also have to find a quarterback to run the Wing T.
5. Marion County Warriors
Last Season’s Record- 9-3, lost to Friendship in Quarterfinals
Head Coach- Mac McCurry
Returning Starters On Offense/Defense- 7/9
Offense- Wing T
Key Returnees– Blake Zeman (FB/LB, Jr.), Hamilton Shoemaker (RB, Sr.), Chandler Willis (RB, Jr.), Deion Reilly (DB, Jr.), Taylor Condra (OL/DE, Sr.)
Key Losses– Matt Zeman (QB), Jeb McCullough (TE/LB), Eric Qualls (WR),Daylan Brown (OL), Jake Murphy (OL)
Spring Strengths– The Warriors had a transformation under first year coach Mac McCurry turning a 1-9 record in 2011 to a Quarterfinal appearance.
Junior running back Blake Zeman had a huge sophomore year rushing for over 1,800 yards while running mate Hamilton Shoemaker had a good end of the 2012 season.
Spring Questions– If injuries hit the Warriors they could be in trouble so the spring will be about gaining depth in Jasper.

Spring Strengths– The Cardinals start as the team to beat in West Tennessee after making the title game last season.
Senior running back Zak Neary returns after having a stellar junior campaign and he will run behind offensive linemen Bradley Hornbuckle and Colton Williams also having defensive playmaker Ross
Spring Questions– The biggest question is how will Adamsville replace the contributions of quarterback Dalton Plunk who was such a playmaker for the Cardinals.
3. Mitchell Tigers
Last Season’s Record- 9-3, lost to Trezevant in second round of 4A playoffs
Head Coach- Nathan Cole
Returning Starters On Offense/Defense-9/7
Key Returnees– DeJuan McQuarters (ATH, Sr.), Tomadreus Trezevant (QB, Jr.), Jarvis Jones (LB, Sr.), Alphonso Parker (LB, Sr.), Chris Gladney (OL, Sr.), Denzel Murphy (OL/DL, Sr.), Sait Gueye (K, Sr.), Calvin Marion (DB, Sr.)
Key losses– Antonio Gilliam (FS/ATH), Deadrick Mayberry (RB), Anthony Williams (SS/K), Jeremiah Blanchard (DE/LB)
Spring Strengths– Moving down two classifications from 4A to 2A will be a huge strength for the Tigers who are blessed with athletes all over the field.
The Tiger passing offense starts with junior quarterback Tomadreus Trezevant to all world athlete DeJuan McQuarters who lines up all over the field.
Spring Questions– The Tigers will have to find someone who will carry the football at the running back position.
Their region is very weak to the point they should win it easily which cold hurt them when the playoffs roll around.
2. Goodpasture Cougars
Last Season’s Record- 5-6, lost to CPA in first round of Class 3A playoffs
Head Coach- Leslie Mote
Returning Starters On Offense/Defense- 5/5
Offense- Spread Option

Key losses-Jedediah Vivio (OL), Eric Reed (RB), Bradley Hager (DT), Casey Gillespie (OL), Michael Gragg (OL)
Spring Strengths– Having running back Carter Wiseman back is a good start.
Wiseman is a talented athlete and gives new coach Leslie Mote a good player to build his spread offense around.
Also having leading tacklers Wyatt Wolfe and Wade Arrington also is a good start for the Cougars as well.
Spring Questions– Going from the run heavy Wing T to the pass happy Spread will take time to implement and for the players to learn and get used to.
Will Freshman quarterback C.J. Laws have a productive season like his eighth grade year in 2012?
1. Grace Christian Academy
Last Season’s Record- 10-2, lost to Boyd Buchanan in Quarterfinals
Head Coach- Randy McKamey
Returning Starters On Offense/Defense- 7/7
Offense- Spread Wing T

Key losses– Will McKamey (RB, Class A Mr. Football Back Winner), Jonathan Griffith (K), Bryson Shelton (DB).
Spring Strengths– The Rams have a superstar in the making in senior quarterback Devin Smith.
Smith has good speed and size (6-4) plus he throws a good deep ball something that is a weapon in the run heavy Wing T offense especially when he throws to leading receiver Andy Eddins.
Spring Questions– Will senior running back Nathan Silver be able to step in and take up the slack left by Class A Mr. Football Back Winner Will McKamey who signed with the Naval Academy.
