The cost of the city of Detroit is to be positioned in the light of hope. It’s Funny how people can position themselves as heroes when they believe someone is in a desperate situation. They bring the hope with them so easily. It’s even funnier how people can position themselves as victims when they believe a hero is on the way to save them. Detroit is not in a desperate situation. Detroit is not a damsel in distress. Detroit just needs to be its own Calvary, its own hero.
The State of Michigan wanted to be Detroit’s hero, but it didn’t want Detroit to ask any questions. That should be a point concern for all involved. However, the best hero a city can have is the state that it resides in. The state always has a dog in the fight when it comes to the cities within it. Belle Isle as a state park is not a bad idea as long as the residents still get affordable access.
Billionaires want Belle Isle. Well, Detroiters want Belle Isle and they have stayed when so many have left. They have stuck it out when it came to bulk garbage pick-up issues, crime issues and out of control tax issues. They have stuck it out when leader after leader promised the moon, but couldn’t deliver for whatever reason. They have believed and hoped and dreamed and stood day after day and they want Belle Isle. They want Detroit, all of it.
Some of Detroit has been contracted out already to the Detroit Historical Museums to the Detroit Historical Society, the Detroit Zoo to the Detroit Zoological Society and Belle Isle moving towards the Belle Isle Conservancy. All three of these organizations have taken some form of control over Detroit’s jewels.
The question isn’t why this happens. We no the answer. somebody is convince somebody else will do a better job at operations. they then convince somebody else they will do a better job then the campaign. Once the media gets involved it’s all over but the shouting. One of the last jewels Detroit has is its water. Now, they have a collective to oversee the Detroit Water Department. The real questions are: What did Detroit get out of it? What will Detroit get out of it? How does this help Detroit?
Detroiter’s shouldn’t give themselves the short end of the stick. Detroit’s leaders need to stop thinking of Detroit as less unfortunate. They need hope and to position themselves in that new light. When you are always looking to someone else or something else to validate you, you will lose. Detroit’s ability to position itself in a new light of hope means blocking out the naysayers and getting down to business. They have a lot of work ahead of them, but they don’t get anywhere until they make the decision to win.
