Memorials for Beatles friend Tony Sheridan will be held in two cities on March 11, his longtime friend Dave Humphries tells Beatles Examiner. Humphries says the memorials will be held in Hamburg, Germany, and San Diego, Ca. Humphries says the San Diego event will be an intimate gathering. We’ll post more info as it becomes available.
Additionally, Ken Michaels told us Wednesday night he now has posted his 1992 Tony Sheridan interview on his webpage.
Merseyside bluesman Al Peters has also shared more memories of Sheridan, sharing with “The Beatles and Me” Facebook page when he backed Tony Sheridan as part of a pick-up band at The Liverpool Cavern in 1989, a spokesman for the web page said.
Peters said he remembers how Sheridan took spontaneity to the extreme by refusing to tell the band the name of the song that they played next, or what key it was in. By the time you found out the key, Peters said, he would change it many times within the same song. (Note: Sheridan friend Dave Humphries also talked about playing music with Sheridan during our interview with him on our “Things We Said Today” Beatles news podcast this week.)
In a break from the set, the ‘Wildman’ of early Merseybeat headed to the nearby Grapes pub where he was involved in not one but three different fights! Al also recalls drinking more than he had ever done before and the rest as they say is a blur.
“The Beatles and Me” Facebook page, a project to gather unheard Beatles encounters, has been the source of several new Beatles-related stories in recent months. Among these were a story about a receipt unearthed from the Beatles playing at the Birkenhead YMCA in 1962 and the later story of a musician who played with them there. A story about Beatles manager Brian Epstein’s Army days was also newly revealed. A book collecting the stories is due next month.
