A record high temperature was set in Albany, NY on Wednesday as the mercury reached 56 degrees, this eclipsed the old record of 54 degrees, set in 1974. The record high temperature for today at Albany, NY is 56 degrees, and as of 5AM EST Thursday morning, the temperature was 53 degrees. The record does appear to be safe for today, though it will be a close call.
A potent cold front will cross the region during the morning hours today, bringing with it rainfall, and a marked increase in the winds. Winds had been pretty gusty during the overnight period last night, though not dangerously gusty. A look at observation across New York state this morning shows that gusty winds are accompanying, and behind, the cold front. Fulton, NY was reporting wind gusts to 43 MPH at 5AM EST this morning, while as Rochester, NY reported 41 MPH gusts, and Buffalo, NY reported 47 MPH gusts. These gusty winds are expected to overspread the Capital Region and vicinity by this afternoon. A high wind warning is in effect for the Capital Region and vicinity through 6PM EST Thursday evening, as winds may gust to near or over 55 MPH this afternoon.
As the low pressure area moves into the Canadian Maritime provinces tonight and Friday, winds should begin to decrease in magnitude, however, it is still forecast to remain quite brisk and blustery straight through the end of the work week. In addition, several weak disturbances look to ride across the region straight through the coming weekend. Each will bring with it a chance for some snow showers and squalls, thus keeping temperatures in the near to slightly below normal category through the into the new work week.
