Shock Rocker Marilyn Manson performed at the Fillmore Detroit last week, in support of his album released last May entitled Born Villian. This is Manson’s eighth full-length studio album, released on his own vanity label called Hell, Etc. via Cooking Vinyl Records. This leg of the tour is of North America, and features a new metal band on the scene called The Butcher Babies.
Manson sold meet and greet tickets to the Detroit Fillmore show, and for a meer $150 (not including the ticket price) you got a meet and greet, photo with Manson and a t-shirt. Fans also had the option of a $450 meet and greet ticket, that included all of the above, and a personally autographed lithograph, which is of a painting by Manson. Yes, this guy is not just a performance artist and a Rock Star, but also a Fine Art Painter. These fans were in the house by 3:00 pm and many that attended said he was super chill and very friendly.
The show kicked off early, with The Butcher Babies hitting the stage around 8pm. This band is fronted by two hot chicks, Carla Harvey and Heidi Shepherd. Both ladies are former Playboy TV and radio personalities, and are known for dressing provocative. They have a killer band, with Henry Flury (Amen) on lead guitar, Jason Klein (Azdachao) on bass, and Chris Warner (Scars of Tomorrow) on drums. I have heard that these girls are normally covered in blood and sport electrical tape on their nipples, but not at this Detroit show. Maybe because they weren’t allowed to be the shock rockers of the show, since it is Manson’s tour. They may have turned down the show visually, but they didn’t disappoint with the performance. These gals can sing and growl unlike anything else in the metal scene, sounding like a female version of Pantera or Slipknot. They head bang, they jump, and boy did they get the Detroit crowds attention. Everyone seemed in awe or in love. Singer Carla Harvey yelled out to the crowd that she hails from Detroit, and the crowd loved them even more. The Butcher Babies have just released their first EP and I think this is just the beginning of a band we will be seeing and hearing a lot more of. The band is currently at work on their full-length debut, which is slated for worldwide release this summer via Century Media Records.
Marilyn Manson was up next, and us photographers got the usual first song to shoot. “Hey Cruel World” opened the show, a Manson song that I just love! Manson came out with a gas mask on, dressed to impress of course and acting like he doesn’t have a care in the world. Manson thankfully didn’t sing with the mask on very long, and we got to see his white face and empty blue eyes. The song was over fast, so out into the masses I went. The Detroit crowd was hype, loud and aggressive. A sea of fashionable, dark, goth fans swayed to the songs and screamed out the lyrics. Mason played a few new songs and two great covers of Personal Jesus (Depeche Mode) and Sweet Dreams Are Made Of This (Eurythmics). He did the usual numerous outfit changes, with swanky furs and customized hats. Manson seemed to be in a chipper mood for this show. He joked about the time he almost went to prison, in the fine city of Detroit. Reminiscing back to 2001, of the time he got in trouble performing a show at DTE Energy Music Theater (also known as Pine Knob). Manson allegedly put his genitals on the head of a security guard in the pit while performing. It made national headlines but Manson just laughed about it, asking the crowd, “Do I look like I would have sex with a man’s head?” Well, the crowd screamed “Yes” and Manson replied that he would never ever do anything like that.
