The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced a recall of chocolate marshmallow eggs on Feb. 27. Zachary Confections, Inc. recalled their chocolate covered marshmallow eggs due to possible contamination with salmonella.
The Frankfort, Ind.-based company decided to recall all of the product lots following a test result – during routine sample tests of one of their finished product lots – indicated the possible presence of salmonella.
The affected confectionary was shipped out of their facility, Feb. 22-23; they were distributed to retail stores in Iowa, Minn., N.D., S.D. and Wis.
The 5-ounce Zachary Chocolate Covered Marshmallow Eggs were packed in white colored egg crate cartons with UPC number 0 75186 15797 8.
The affected cartons will have “Best-By date of 2/14/14” stamp with any one of the various Code Dates, D3245D, D3145E, F3145E or D3245E.
According to the FDA,” Salmonella, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.”
No illness or complaints have been reported as a result of this recall to date.
Consumers who have purchased the affected candy may return the product back to the place of purchase for a full refund.
Any further questions concerning this recall should contact Zachary Confections Customer Service at 765-654-8356, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. EST.
