According to icasualties.org, there were 402 coalition military fatalities in Afghanistan, during Operation Enduring Freedom in 2012. The number of deaths have been trending downward since 2009.
In the theater of war, casualties are expected. Military personnel are highly trained to enter into battle. They are aware that while deployed, they may suffer the ultimate sacrifice. Unfortunately, Chicago resident Nathaniel T. Jackson entered a different war zone, his neighborhood.
Mr. Jackson, was the 500th murder victim of 2012, a sad statistic in the murder capital of our nation, Chicago. As of Jan 21, 2013, there were 31 homicides and 109 reported shooting victims in Chicago
Former White House Chief of Staff and current Mayor, Rahm Emanuel continues to overlook the increasing number of gang activity ,and contributes the violence to assault weapons. After the Sandy Hook School shootings, he was asked;why Chicago’s violence has increased since he became mayor, even though Chicago has the nations strictest gun laws. He said:”It’s time that we as a city have an assault weapons ban. It’s time that we as a state have an assault weapons ban. It’s time that we as a country have an assault weapons ban,”
Mayor Emanuel’s position on why his city is the most dangerous in the country has nothing to do with solving the trend of violence in his city, it is nothing but politics. Taking legal weapons from ordinary citizens will increase the crime rate.
According to Chicago police, 80% of the murders that were committed in the city in 2012, were gang related. Mr. Emanuel’s theory, demonstrates his ignorance to the fact that gangs do not legally purchase firearms and taking them away from normal citizens will only endanger more lives.
A controversial study by economist John Lott of the University of Chicago found violent crime fell after states passed laws giving people the right to carry concealed handguns from 1977 to 1992. He also discovered that the number of mass shootings per 100,000 people was .0136. After they passed right-to-carry legislation, that figure dropped to .002 per 100,000 people — an 84 percent drop.
Mr. Lott’s study was highly criticized by his peers one even calling it “freakonomics” however his numbers were solid and reproducible.
During my time as a security consultant in South Sudan, I witnessed gangs carrying automatic weapons and terrorizing villages. They would burn down the schools and medical clinics. However, whenever the villagers were armed and trained to defend themselves, the gangs would avoid any conflicts with them.
Recently Milwaukee County Sheriff David A. Clark Jr. Urged his residents to take firearms training and be prepared to defend themselves if a criminal confronts them. “People are responsible to play a role in their own safety, with the help of law enforcement,” Clarke said. “I’m here to do my part, but we have fewer and fewer resources. We’re not omnipresent, and we have to stop giving people that impression.”
Mr. Emanuel needs to be concerned with stopping the battle zone in his city and ending the illegal arms from infiltrating his communities. A gun ban only benefits the criminals and leaves ordinary citizens defenseless.
