As obesity has been a big problem in the US within recent decades we take a look at celebrities who have had major weight loss. Americans often look to celebrities as the role models of our nation and their issues can often reflect the issues of the country. As celebrities begin to take weight loss seriously and bring the issue to the forefront of our society there is chance for a change in our country’s health and diet.
Even some of our “big and jolly” stars like Jonah Hill, Al Roker, and Roseanne Barr have taken the healthy route and dropped the pounds. The road to fit and healthy is not an easy one as some our celebs have taken different approaches to shed the pounds. From dieting and exercise to weight loss surgery, our celebrities are doing whatever it takes to get the results they want.

Jonah Hill known for his hilarious behavior as the chubby loser has shed pounds, either for his career or for his health. Fans were very surprised at Hill’s slimmer look. It was said Hill set a goal to shed 30 pounds for his role in ‘21 Jump Street’ and reports state he actually lost 40 pounds. Other reports state he has made the choice as a health conscious decision. Regardless of his reason, the funny chubster has continued to maintain a healthy weight.
Etta James was 5’3” inches weighing in at 400 pounds and had a big, filling voice that matched her bod. James realized that maintaining at this weight was not healthy and would be the downfall of her career. She confided in Roseanne Barr which helped her decision to undergo gastric surgery. She lost 235 pounds and kept that weight off through to her death. She also blamed the procedure for much of her health problems prior to her passing.
Jennifer Hudson, Grammy and Oscar award holder, has been in the public eye very often with her weight changes. Hudsons dramatic weight loss was a very big deal in 2010 as she dropped to a size 6 from being a size 16. She lost 80 pounds through weight watchers and manages to keep it off. Hudson has been a spokesperson for Weight Watchers and discusses her battle with weight loss in her book, “I Got This: How I Changed My Ways and Lost What Weighed Me Down.”
Star Jones Reynolds
Co-Host of ‘The View’ Star Jones reached 307 pounds and realized she had to do something about her weight. In 2003, Jones underwent gastric bypass surgery and lost 160 pounds within 3 years of the surgery. She dropped from a size 26 to size 6. Although, being known for her public openness she was hush about the surgery as she was afraid she would fail in weight loss attempt; she revealed the truth of the procedure in 2007. Jones has experienced some health issues since the surgery and also diagnosed with heart disease.
The well known blogger, Perez Hilton actively decided to lose weight and worked hard with diet and exercise not only to slim down but build a beach body. Hilton has stated that he is working hard than ever on his fitness and will continue. He has reported mental and physical euphoria from working out and maintaining a healthy diet. Hilton made the migration from losing weight just to get healthy into the world of fitness, which he attests is harder, and ongoing work.
From Season 1 to the current airing of American Idol, you will notice a great difference in the size of panel judge Randy Jackson. Jackson had weight loss surgery, gastric bypass sugery, in 2003 after deciding that it would make sense when he refers contestants to lose weight. During his time as overweight, Jackson was diagnosed as type-2 diabetic and suffered from sleep apnea; all common among overweight people. After the surgery jackson lost 114 pounds from his original weight of 329 pounds and dropped four shirt sizes to a large. He has maintained his healthy weight and shows it stylishly on Idol and many red carpets.
The well known actress/comedian and infamous Star Spangled Banner shouter, Roseanne Barr, underwent gastric bypass surgery in 1998. Barr was serious about losing weight and had the surgery done, which she describes as, “having her enitire digestive system removed.” Although finding humor in the procedure, Barr seriously lost nearly 200 pounds; going from about 350 to 168.
Al Roker, ‘Today’ on NBC’s jolly weather man, had gastric bypass surgery in 2002 to lose over 100 pounds. Roker felt it was time to lose weight and did the necessary measures. He has said that an overweight person will not do anything about their weight until they feel they are ready, regardless of criticism of those around him. I take it that this was the case in Roker’s life as he has mentioned his weight issues took a toll on his marriage.
After retiring from the NBA, Charles Barkley gained a trumping 100 pounds. The NBA Hall of Famer and sports announcer used to joke about his blow up but realized how unhealthy it was and began his road to weight loss. Teaming up with Weight Watchers Chuck reported a 60 pound loss in 2012 and attributes much of his dedication to the support and motivation of friends.
Sharon Osbourne underwent gastric band surgery in 1999 which resulted in a loss of 100 pounds. In 2006 she had the band removed and her struggles with her weight returned. As of late Osbourne has began a new diet that has helped her greatly. She currently has a new commercial promoting her new Atkins Dietary routine. Since beginning the new diet she has proclaimed a loss of 28 pounds and feels good with the process.
