Brake for Yellow Safety Campaign Inspired by Former Student, Friend

by snap twig

Brake for Yellow, a public service campaign supporting safe driving, is bringing awareness to motorist throughout Palm Beach County of the dangers of speeding through yellow traffic signals. The Brake for Yellow campaign will officially launch on Saturday, March 2, 2013, at Northwood University Florida’s Auto Show of the Palm Beaches.

The Brake for Yellow campaign was created by students of Northwood University who were inspired by former classmate Houston Lillo, a 22-year-old Northwood University student who was killed in a fatal auto accident last year. According to the vehicle homicide investigation report, as the traffic signal cycled to yellow, Lillo changed lanes to avoid cars slowing to stop at the intersection. Lillo was attempting to make it through the yellow traffic light when he was struck by an oncoming vehicle. The debut of Brake for Yellow campaign comes almost a year to the date of a fatal auto accident involving Lillo.

On March 2nd and 3rd Northwood University students will be honoring their fallen classmate by participating in the Auto Show of the Palm Beaches to help spread awareness of the hazards of speeding up for yellow traffic lights. The campaign will have its first-ever booth at the auto show, sporting a bright yellow Porsche sponsored by Braman Motors and answering any questions about the campaign. Additionally, interactive games with auto show participants will be held and complementary Break for Yellow airbrush tattoos and lemon Italian ices will be handed out for free to all auto show participants to debut the public service campaign and generate awareness.
“The decision is not an uncommon one,” said Garret Forrester, a Northwood University sophomore. “It is one we all make almost every day. However, on March 9, 2012, it was a decision that cost a fellow classmate his life. Our purpose is to bring awareness to the importance of stopping at a yellow light when possible.”
