In the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, the people of the United States have become polarized on yet another topic. This time, the topic is keeping our children safe. The means to do this are, of course, quite varied. The anti-gun movement would see all firearms banned, and the Second Amendment gutted. The pro-gun movement would see the causes of mental instability addressed, and not have rights infringed upon.
Obama has made clear he intends to address school shootings, and has put his political muscle into gun control. By doing this, he further alienates the population, and falsely vilifies the law abiding citizen as part of a violent ‘gun culture’ that is somehow responsible for these shootings.
America is made up of some of the brightest and wisest minds in the world. It is also made up of some of the most power hungry, controlling, and greedy minds. Such is the double-edged sword of Freedom. We have room to grow into all we can be, and our efforts, if successful, can result in great wealth and great power.
To aid in the ‘solution’ of this issue, Vice President Joe Biden was made the head of a ‘gun violence prevention task force’. By naming the group this, it was immediately clear that the solutions proposed would be outright infringements on Americans’ rights. If these politicians were so eager to solve the problem at hand, this task force would have been named a ‘citizen safety task force’ or other such name. The group has erroneously and narrowly defined the problem and their intended solution.
Furthermore, the ‘task force’ created is entirely agenda based. Most have a proven track record of infringing on the rights of citizens (all in the name of security).
Vice President Joe Biden: Biden was the author of the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act, otherwise known as the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban. From http://www.ontheissues.org/2008/Joe_Biden_Gun_Control.htm , a brief summary of his history is available:
- Continue assault weapons ban.Voted against banning lawsuits against gun manufacturers for gun violence
- Voted for background checks at gun shows
- Voted against heightened penalties for gun & drug violations
- Voted against loosening license and background checks at gun shows
- Rated F by the NRA, demonstrating an anti-2A voting record
Unnamed White House officials: It stands to reason that with as much as the political left likes to talk about diversity, they would put pro-gun individuals on this task force to explore the broad-spectrum viewpoints, political ramifications, and differing interpretations of the situation. This task force has all the makings of a stocked pond, designed to ensure a gun control solution.
Attorney General Eric Holder: Holder is no stranger to the firearm debate. He has given very inconsistent testimony regarding his involvement, and how much Obama knew, in Operation Fast and Furious. This operation allowed almost 3000 firearms to be sold to known traffickers for Mexican drug cartels. Firearms from the operation have been directly linked to the death of at least one Border Patrol agent, and hundreds of Mexican nationals.
Furthermore, Holder’s anti-firearm bias goes back decades, not seeking a way for firearms to be a peaceful element of society, but rather the complete removal of firearms from society. He hoped to accomplish this through stigmatizing firearm owners and other social engineering.
In this Youtube video, he liken cigarette smoking with firearms, suggesting that people ‘cower outside’ to smoke, and suggests society needs to make gun owners feel they need to cower against admitting they have firearms.
“I’ve also asked the school board, to make a part of every day, some type of anti-violence, anti-gun message. Every day, every school, at every level.” -Attorney General Eric Holder
To his credit, he does wish to address anti-violence, which is the REAL issue here, and seeks to de-glorify violence and killing in the media, but to make anti-gun messages is to blame the tool for the man that wields it. However, with his anti-gun history, and what should be a TREASONOUS attempt to dismantle the Second Amendment by allowing American firearms into the hands of Mexican cartels, he makes for a very biased member of a task force panel.
Secretary of Education Arne Duncan: Secretary Duncan grew up in Chicago, and self proclaims he had many good friends die from gunshot wounds. Chicago’s gang violence problems, often misdiagnosed as gun problems, led to a handgun ban in 1982. Arne Duncan’s experiences are valid, as one part of the spectrum, but there appears to be no counterpoint to the opposite end of the spectrum. Where is the rural teacher, or Education specialist, who grew up taking a rifle to school in his trunk to go hunting afterwards (this is shocking in today’s world, but was quite common across rural America for people of Duncan’s age). Where is this viewpoint that the gun is an everyday tool for managing the farm or ranch?
Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano: Janet ‘Big Sis’ Napolitano has skirted the issue of person freedom in her career, justifying the right’s infringing TSA, and even going so far as to say the biggest internal threat to American is our own military veterans. This report, called “Rightwing Extremism: Current Economic”, was so broadly worded that anyone with an opposing viewpoint of any federal policy could be interpreted as a terrorist threat. This level of partisanship is, frankly, dangerous.
These two viewpoints give a clear look at one thing: Control. Being able to control peoples’ movement as well as vilifying any capable opposition to her control are effective means to squash dissent. Her appointment to this task force was only natural from an anti-gun viewpoint, because of the specific purpose the 2A plays in ensuring ultimate political power remains with The People.
Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius: During Sebelius’ term as governor of Kansas, she played lip service to Second Amendment rights, but twice vetoed a bill to allow law-abiding Kansans the right to carry concealed weapons. Her second veto was overridden by the Kansas legislature, making Kansas amongst the last states to allow citizens the right to concealed carry.
Follow up: The NRA met with this panel, and expressed their disappointment with the outcome.
We were disappointed with how little this meeting had to do with keeping our children safe and how much it had to do with an agenda to attack the Second Amendment. While claiming that no policy proposals would be “prejudged,” this Task Force spent most of its time on proposed restrictions on lawful firearms owners — honest, taxpaying, hardworking Americans. -NRA statement on meeting with Biden’s task force.
With the panel assembled, there can be little doubt of the outcome. They hide behind one another, claiming it was a task force and not just one man’s agenda, or one politician’s goal. In fact, Biden even goes on to ludicrously say they are reaching consensus on the issue.
