Drugstores, big box stores, and beauty stores have all recognized a new healthy hair trend in their spring product resets.
Fans of it call it a healthy hair miracle. In the past it was available only as a harsh chemical treatment found at salons and afforded by the rich and pampered but not anymore.
You don’t have to go to the pricey salon for the frizz free look. You also don’t have to worry about the harsh chemicals. This new trend is a healthier more affordable alternative.
Discount shelves are now loaded with many brands of the “secret” to healthy frizz free hair known as keratin.
What is keratin and how does it work?
A recent article from the Livestrong Foundation explains it as such, “Keratin is a type of fibrous protein that makes up part of your skin, hair and nails, and is the compound that makes your skin tough and waterproof. Cells in your skin that contain keratin are constantly being shed and replaced by new cells. Hair grows by forming new rods of cells at the base of the root that move up through the skin as new cells form beneath them. This process cuts off the rods from their nutritional supply, and they form keratin in a process called keratinization. The dead cells and keratin form the shaft of the hair.”
Packaged in serum, spray and oil formats, these kertin hair repair products are being proclaimed as a hair miracle. Also a miracle is these products are affordable for the masses as well as a hot spring hair trend.
According to a Chicago Tribune article, “keratin-based hair-smoothing treatments have gained popularity among curly-haired women of all races, who gush that their de-frizzing effects are nothing short of life-changing. And they’ve been a lucrative new business for many salons, with treatments generally ranging from $350 to $600 and lasting about four months.”
While these salon keratin treatments were a popular, they caused many salon owner’s and clients concern due to their health risks. Keratin treatments contain large amounts of formaldehyde.
The Oregon OSHA report notes that the Environmental Protection Agency, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and the International Agency for Research on Cancer all list formaldehyde as a suspected or known human carcinogen.
There are tons of products on the market that promise to smooth out the damage and frizz that over styling, over coloring, and over working our hair causes.
Keratin based over the counter products are formaldehyde free and can tame the frizz and strengthen your hair preventing breakage.
Hair’s natural levels of protein decrease with age, causing a frizzy, dull texture. The treatment redeposits keratin, a type of protein, which fills in the ridges of curls to unwind them, offering the look of a fresh salon blowout every day. Conditioners like coconut oil add softness and shine.
Some critics have been quick to point out that these products are completely not completely chemical free. Be sure to check the labels for hidden chemicals in some of the products. Hair care experts add that these chemicals are added to these products to enhance the conditioning effect.
In a age where even teens are coloring, straightening, curling, and abusing their hair, these affordable keratin products give us hope for healthier hair.
This is a trend that we see last way into the summer. Healthy hair and a healthier “you” never goes out of style.
