Racers come from all over the globe and recently there has been a Northern Canadian influence in NASCAR. Kelly Admiraal (Western Camp Services/Empire Camp #83) from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada is the next talented driver to make his mark. This weekend, the Admiraal Racing team has its sights set on Phoenix for round one of the 2013 campaign for the NASCAR K&N Pro Series.
The series will share the spotlight with the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series at Phoenix (AZ) International Raceway, the one-mile paved oval known as the desert jewel. The 60-lap shootout draws competitors from both the East and West division’s along with a driver’s from Canada and Mexico.
The event will by Admiraal’s third career start in the 60-year old NASCAR series. In his previous trip to Phoenix last fall, Admiraal qualified an impressive 14th and finished 28th in a car down on horsepower.
This year the tables are turned and the team knows they are competitive and have a car that is capable of a top finish. “We are only running a handful of races in the K&N Pro Series this season, so we plan to make each of them count,” explained team manager Ian Admiraal.
“We have new cars and engines along with bringing in Craig Raudman (a championship winning driver who has also been most of the most successful crew chiefs in recent years) to the team to lead us on raceday. His experience will be invaluable and we cannot wait to see all the hard work pay off.”
For Kelly’s part, he will balance a heavy school load in his final semester of high school while at the same time compete in a variety of racing series’ all season long throughout the United States and Canada. “I am so excited about going back to Phoenix and competing,” Kelly Admiraal offered. “I learned so much last fall and look forward to the challenge of racing at such a fast and challenging track.”
Admiraal has made two previous starts in the series with a best finish of 11th in Albuquerque, NM last September. “I feel more comfortable in these cars each time I am on track,” Admiraal offered. “Phoenix is an incredible track and to be part of the NASCAR weekend is going to be a lot of fun.”
