All sorts of animals take up residence at The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore, coming from around the globe with places ranging from Arctic Tundra to the hottest African Savannah, and even Maryland. Although, a visit to the Zoo is great in spring and summer, the winter season can be a fun and unique experience.
Winter Hours at the Zoo
During January and February 2014, the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore’s winter hours return, being open only on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Starting January 3, 2014, visitors will receive half off regular weekend admission.
According to Don Hutchinson, president/CEO of The Maryland Zoo, “Many people have come to realize that a winter Zoo visit is a vastly different experience than it is any other time of year. Of course, it’s that difference that makes the Zoo a special place.”
Winter Challenges
In the winter, zoo keepers have different challenges to handle. They need to check weather conditions, including temperature, winds and ground slickness. From this information, keepers will decide which animals can come out that day.
Of course, animals such as tortoises and some African birds will remain in their barns until spring. Keepers also prepare exhibits before the cold sets in, so conditions are more tolerable for the animals.
According to Mike McClure, the general curator, “Many of the animals such as the leopards and penguins go in and out all winter long. And, as you can imagine, the otters and polar bears love our Maryland winters.”
