This year has been one of the best years for movies.
Seth McFarlane took the job as a host as the Oscars try and attract to a younger audience. My advice to attract a younger audience and its not just a younger host. It’s to nominate movies that the younger audience actually watches.
With that being said, McFarlane did an okay job as hosting. I had expected a little bit more comedy and jokes on the stars, but it was toned down. I have a feeling that the censors are blame to that.
There was a tribute to the musicals of the past decade. Catherine Zeta-Jones, Jennifer Hudson, and the cast of Les Miserables all performed and reminded us how musical numbers can still steal the show.
Now on to the awards.
While there are some awards that were locks, there were some awards that we really didn’t know who would win until that envelope was popped open.
One of those awards is for Best Actress. The award has been neck and neck with both Jennifer Lawrence for Silver Linings Playbook Jessica Chastain for Zero Dark Thirty both favorites to win. This years winner went to someone who had one of the best years of her young career, Jennifer Lawrence. And in true to her form, she steals the moment away when she falls climbing the stairs to the stage before giving a very nice speech.

There was another surprising victory for Best Director which went to Ang Lee for Life of Pi. It was a surprise as Steven Speilberg was a favorite to win for Lincoln. Life of Pi was also the big winner of the night bringing up four awards in total.

Now of course there are some awards that have been a lock since the awards were announced. One of those is for Best Actor which went to Daniel Day-Lewis for Lincoln. With his victory, he now has three in this category which is the most for an actor in the category.

Another lock in was Anne Hathaway for Les Miserables. Some critics had thought that Sally Field might win it for Lincoln, I knew it wasn’t gonna happen. Hathaway stole this award the moment her close-up performance was shown. This is her first win and she was nervous as she gave her speech.

Now for the big award of the night. Best Picture. The nine movies that were nominated were all good in their own way, but only one movie would be able to take home the Oscar. And that movie was Argo. Despite Ben Affleck being snubbed for Best Director, he was still abled to get honored.

Overall, it’s not the worst show that I’ve seen, but it certainly wasn’t the best. I think that Tina Fey and Amy Poehler ruined that for everyone because they did such an amazing job at the Globes. Since then, no host has been able to reach their level. McFarlane did his best but I think that Fey and Poehler should just host every award ceremony.
