NATIONAL (BTSNews) January 17, 2013 — A 12 year-old girl, who was the third and final victim of a multiple shooting in Hazard, Kentucky, is the latest child to die by gun violence.
Taylor Cornett, a sixth grader at R. W. Combs Elementary school in Perry County, had been allegedly shot multiple times by 21 year-old Dalton Lee Stidham, who is also accused of shooting and killing the girl’s father, Jackie Doug Cornett, and cousin, Caitlin Paige Cornett, as they sat in a family car.
The shooting occurred just five hours after the shooter, Stidham, legally purchased a handgun and passed a federally-mandated background check.
Stidham and the 12 year-old’s cousin, Caitlin, had previously agreed to meet in the parking lot of Hazard Community and Technical College for court-ordered visitation over their two year-old son. The 12 year-old girl and her father had come to the visitation because of Stidham’s reputation for anger management problems.
Young Taylor’s death is estimated to be the 1013th American gun-related death since the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Connecticut.
BEHIND THE SCENES, President Obama seeks tougher gun control laws in response to the Newtown shooting in Connecticut. Many Republicans and gun control activists are resisting the proposed laws, arguing that the proposed gun control measures will have no meaningful effect on murders in America. They further argue that the proposed laws, if enacted, would only work to penalize and infringe the rights of law-abiding gun owners who own guns for self-defense, hunting or recreational shooting. Guns that could have been used to defend the life of a 12 year-old girl against an alleged murderer.
Neither the President’s proposed gun control laws, nor even the newly-enacted, toughest-in-the-nation gun laws passed in New York, would have prevented Stidham from legally purchasing the gun he used to kill three innocents as they sat in their car. Gun rights proponents urge that, because criminals will continue to disregard gun law and murder laws, and will continue to arm themselves to commit violent crimes, gun control will only needless and punitively strip law abiding citizens of their ability to defend themselves.
